Frequently Asked Questions
A dental implant is a replacement tooth root made of titanium that is surgically anchored into the jaw and after healing a crown is attached to this titanium root.
Dental implants are the next best thing to having your own teeth. They look and feel natural. If you’ve experienced tooth loss as a result of an accident, tooth decay, root canal failure, or gum disease, dental implants may be your answer. Dental implants also may serve as secure anchors for a bridge or dentures if you have multiple missing teeth.
Dental implants are stronger and more durable than dentures or a bridge. In addition there is no need to grind the adjacent teeth In the case of multiple missing teeth, dental implants may be used to support a dental bridge or with dentures to increase stability. Dental implants, whether used in combination with dentures or a bridge or on their own, make it easier to eat the food you love, speak clearly and smile with confidence.
When you don’t replace a missing tooth, it can result in damage to adjacent teeth. You may experience difficulty eating and speaking, shifting teeth, over eruption of the opposite teeth, jaw aches, and headaches. Also, when you lose a tooth and its accompanying root, you can experience bone loss in your jaw and enlargement of sinuses.
In most cases, the entire implant procedure can be performed using local anesthesia. However, sedation can be used in conjunction with local anesthesia to make the procedure easier for you.
First your Implantologist will prepare your jaw for implantation. This involves creating a small-diameter hole for placement of the implant screw. Following this placement, often a protective cover screw is placed on top to allow the implant site to heal and the dental implant to anchor. The process is called osseointegration. The site is left to heal for 8 to 12 weeks as required.
Surgery time varies according to the number of implants you need. One implant usually will take about an hour. Multiple implants take longer depending upon the number of implants.
After osseointegration has occurred (this can take from 8 to 16 weeks), your Implantologist will take impressions for the final restoration and the lab will make your final teeth which will be placed in your oral cavity and ready to function.
Overall, the success rate for healthy patients who receive dental implants is very high about 95%. Patients who smoke or who have a history of uncontrolled systemic disease or head and neck radiation, may carry a higher risk of implant failure as compared with healthy patients. During your initial consultation, your Implantologist will review your medical history thoroughly. This will allow him to determine whether dental implants are right for you.
Any person (no age limit), who is healthy and has good oral hygiene is a candidate for dental implants. If you are suffering from any systemic disease such as diabetes, which can be controlled by medications, implant surgery can be performed.
